Swinging life away with crooked teeth
January 13th, 2025
There is something so universal in figuring out life and even finding happiness when things aren’t perfect. Whether that is figuring out what you want to be, who you’ll be with, or even where you’ll end up at. Released on December 13th, the newest single “Swing Life Away” by Crooked Teeth is the testament to these feelings. “Swing Life Away” originally is an acoustic ballad by Rise Against. Yet Crooked Teeth added their own unique blend of electric yet gratifying mixture of pop punk, emo, and alternative sounds to their version of the song to make it their own. With the 2000s alternative rock sound, this track embodies the yearning of finding what’s missing. With vocals from both Tyson Evans, lead singer, and Livi Dillon, bassist singer, the song has all the makings of an instant nostalgic classic. Tyson the lead singer stated that:
“This is the song that Jason (the drummer) and I have talked about covering since around the time that he joined the band. He told me that when he was a teenager that there was a school project where like he wanted to cover this song.”
Which illustrates the immediate sense of familiarity that has been embedded into the song that left me feeling like I’m driving with the windows down at night.

Tyson also mentions:
"Saves The Day are one of my favorite bands. Chris Conley is one of my favorite songwriters and lyricists from the emo pop punk scene. When we were doing our take on "Swing Life Away", I wanted to give it this sort of Through Being Cool treatment.”
With their song “Swing Life Away”, it gives you a piece of itself with every listen. Hearing the lyrics and being able to first handedly resonate with them. As well as also having the opportunities to feeling the music and dance.
“Swing Life Away” beautifully captures both the nostalgic feeling as well as the our feeling of yearning in 3 minutes and 47 seconds.
"It's been awesome getting to release it into the wild and one of my favorite things as a songwriter is getting to show my influences in songs."
